How did you come up with the idea of the INERO™ barrier?

“I’ve worked with conceptual development all my life; in my work as an industrial production manager as well as in my spare time. If I see something that can be improved, I immediately start looking for a solution. I love the whole process, from the needs analysis to the practical implementation. Flood protection has long fascinated me, and the idea for the Inero patent came to me in the early 21st century; it just popped into my head one day. The solution was so commercially viable that I decided to build a company around it. Because I’ve worked for so many years in industrial production optimisation, it didn’t take long at all to start production.”

What opportunities did you see?

“There are numerous ways of stopping water, many of them as old as mankind. You can build ramparts out of soil or wood – boards or pallets. Sandbags are another proven method. All of them are functional in terms of holding back the water. But many of these methods are heavy and take a long time to put in place. Then they take just as long to dismantle. But modern flood protection systems had their disadvantages, too. Some of them were still unnecessarily heavy; others were made of steel that rusted over time. Nearly all of them were complicated to assemble, with many different types of couplings and pins that took a lot of time and expertise. My goal was to take the best of each method and create something completely new.”

What are the advantages of the INERO™ barrier?

“The entire barrier is made of sea-water-resistant marine-grade aluminium. It’s non-corroding and lightweight. The barrier walls are fitted with my patented quick connector, which is stamped into the metal. This makes it easy to interlink the barrier segments with no tools whatsoever. Assembly is quick, easy and can be done by anyone. I myself can install 100 metres of barrier in an hour. The solution also uses very little space, so it simplifies storage and logistics.”
